Sneaky

As Jack got on the bus, his friend was reminded by his Dad to get breakfast in the cafeteria when he arrives to school.  "Can I get breakfast too?"  Jack asked.  "Not this time, Jack"  Mom said.  As he ate a nice, BIG, warm breakfast just minutes before.  Should be the end of the story, right?  Well,  according to his school account one HOT BREAKFAST was purchased that morning.

ooh...Jack's in trouble...

Parents really do have eyes in the back of their heads!  Don't you kids forget that :)

Do You Know What We Did This Summer?

There's 104 days of summer vacation
And school comes along just to end it
So the annual problem for our generation
Is finding a good way to spend it

Like maybe...

Spring Break at Grandma and Grandpa's
Improving my Easter egg dying skills over last year!

Easter Egg Hunt at Minni and Pop Pop's
Carowinds with the cousins!
We learned how to make Jazz Hands!

Preschool Graduation!

We went to Touch a Truck!!!
And conquered the 30 foot bouncy slide!
Saw fireworks and had a picnic!  Bronwyn declared the fireworks to be "pretty flowers in the sky"!
Went to our own local Redneck Riviera
Mommy got a piano (and Bronwyn a new toy...)  Jack took lessons all summer long!!!
Jack went to Lego Camp and learned how to do Stop Action Movies (keep your iPhone close when he is around...trust me!)
Bronwyn combined her love of smiley faces and stickers!
Bronwyn when she learned Summer was over, Jack is in school and she has command of her audience once and for all!

There was so much to do
and the kids had a ball.
Now let's get ready for Fall!

Kindergarten...Meet Jack!

Dear Jack,

To quote Dr. Seuss, "Today is your day, so get on your way!"  That was my sentiment at 6am this morning.  By 6:55 am I was willing to try spinning counterclockwise super fast in an attempt to turn back time.  I read once that the Kindergarten milestone feels like a marathon when viewed at the birth of your child and a sprint when viewed real time!  It is true...just yesterday Daddy and I commented, "Two more years and he starts Kindergarten."

How did your first day go?  You gave Kindergarten two thumbs up, your teacher ten thumbs up, and each child in your class one thumb up (even though you said you didn't meet half of them.)  It wasn't all roses...we are still perplexed at the smell emitting from your returned lunch bag.

How did we do?  Well your overprotective father was online searching ballistic-proof backpacks a few weeks ago.  You picked out a monster backpack instead (at the bus stop you growled at anyone who came close to it...claiming it was the monster, of course!)

I tried to connect with your teacher over some lame joke and got the stare (I suspect you'll experience the stare all on your own around week three.)  This morning I held it together until you started blowing me crazy kisses through the window on the BYB (Big Yellow Bus).

Note, your father chose to take my teary eyed picture rather than console me.

We'll be okay.  I mean we've done okay thus far, right?  We managed to raise a fantastic Kindergartner.  We bought organic milk, gave you zero sugar until you were one, no TV until two, we perfected hovering possibly stalling your walking but on the plus side preventing scarring from skinned knees (forgive us, you were our first!)  More importantly we gave you hours of tickles, a gazillion hugs and unconditional love.  Make no mistake, we'll goof up plenty.  I'll forget to sign a permission slip.  Dad will do your science project when he was just supposed to "help."  Both of us will barrage you with questions about your day like Frost on Nixon.  But, we will support and guide you through school!  We'll attend Parent Teacher conferences--sitting on the excruciatingly small chairs that are wide enough for only one adult butt cheek.  We'll volunteer in the classroom feigning altruism but really spying on your teacher and classmates.   We'll also listen to you, read with you, and even open up our home to your friends!

Jack (K) and Devin (1st Grade)
What about you?  You will be great!  While saying our prayers last night, I asked God to bless you with wisdom when choosing your friends.  You asked him to just bless you with the wisdom to remember the right bus to get on at the end of each day. Clearly, you are already smarter and more practical than your own mother (by the way, you did get on the right bus...YAY!)

But seriously Jack, you were born with a love of learning that allows you to be just as engaged when learning simple math as learning the hokey pokey.  You are not only inquisitive but blessed with a healthy dose of assertiveness that drives you to ask and ask until all your questions are answered.  While confident, you are intrinsically cautious preferring to watch the risk takers break their nose before jumping off the bridge with a tether.  And finally, you are absolutely joyful, finding excitement in the mundane (that should come in handy during most of sixth grade!)  You will be brilliant.
It won't all be perfect though.  You'll get in trouble for things you didn't even do (and things you did, as well.). You'll get teased at some point and your best friend will choose another to sit next to at lunch.  You'll have lonely days, tired days and scary days.  You'll be popular one day and an outcast another.  But one day, you'll look back on all of this and you'll remember how you felt today.  The excitement.  The awe of it. The pure happiness.

Today is as much about Jack starting his journey of becoming his own version of Jack as it is about school buses and backpacks.  Until today Daddy and I were the most important influences on your life.

Starting today your teachers and friends will share that honor with us.

So my final advice?  Choose friends wisely.  Never laugh while sipping milk.  Keep your eyes on your own paper.  Believe in yourself, take risks, study hard and play a tad bit harder!

Now...I am not the only one with advice for you, my precious son.  This blog has a few people who still check in every now and then...granted they are all blood relatives...but let's see (if they can figure out the comments button) what advice they have for you!

I'll love you forever,
Like you for always,
As long as I'm living...
my baby you'll be.

God Bless you baby Jack,

Mom

Jack Ramblings

Jack had trouble falling asleep so he came down to watch end of Idol with me. Here are his groggy questions: "Does Joshua get to keep that costume after the show and where would you wear that?". (in reference to his suit). "Hey look at that...a boy with earrings." Regarding Randy Jackson. We live in Atlanta...he seriously has never seen a a boy with earrings? "Mom, does Rachel flat iron her hair?" A reference to Glee during commercial break. "How come the show has less singers but is SO much longer! That makes no sense at all!"

Jackisms Return

Jack has been dealing with his emotions lately...namely frustration. Here's a few Jackisms to illustrate my point and then a video to exemplify it!

1)  After being caught playing with the Lego Creationary toy that was off-limits for play Jack responded "I know, I know. I can't stop my brain from thinking about these Lego's. They are organized so well and well, you know I am just obsessed."

2) After he was  told to clean them up, put them away and go upstairs to dress for school he says, "I feel like I am in trouble, more trouble than I should be and my bucket is quite empty." (he read the kids version of Fill my Bucket last month.)  I replied, "Jack that feeling is called guilt and remorse."  :)

3)  Later in the morning I attempted to fill his bucket back up by giving him smooches and tickles, to which he said, "Kisses don't fill up my bucket mom, they just get my face all wet. Thanks for trying, though."

Now for the video. Jack is explaining why boredom leads to family dysfunction and concludes (off camera) that the only solution is for us to play with him all the time to ward off the boredom.  I must warn you, if your blood pressure is prone to rise at the sight of monstrous, bratty, whiny angry boys you may wish not to watch.  But do watch if you find angry, frustrated, flailing, wacky boys a bit humorous (as I do).  If you look real close you will notice a certain vein in the forward pops...a feature anyone close to Pop Pop is all too familiar with ;)  Oh, the anger within... so much rage for such a loved five-year old.  Hee-hee.

LegoLand Atlanta

What is Legoland you ask?  Combine Chuck-e-Cheese with Lego's and you get LEGOLAND DISCOVERY CENTER--Atlanta's newest "it" spot for Lego-obsessed boys and girls.  Guess who got season tickets???  It really was a pretty cool place and Jack thoroughly impressed.  Even Bronwyn found it thrilling.  We must go back soon as I realize I got nada for pictures...guess I was enthralled with all the happenings as well.  So what do you do at Legoland?

You marvel at the giant Lego structures and pose for pictures!

You shoot the evil Lego skeletons trying to attack Lego Kingdom while riding along in this big boat through the foggy trails.  And then you jump on the only other ride and pedal your way up to a flying Dumbo kind of Lego ride!

I told you I got nada for pictures...
were you expecting to see the rides?  oops!

Then you are shoved in a room of all these intricate Lego sculptures that resemble the popular landmarks of our city.  It was really cool and I think Jack peed his pants a bit out of excitement.

We saw THREE 4-D Lego movies...Played on the biggest indoor jungle gym for miles...And of course we built...

and built...

and we built...

and built...

even Bronwyn built...

and then we raced cars...cars that we built...

So if you wondered how anyone could make an entire discovery center out of just Lego's...now you know...and did you know in Orlando, FL they have an entire AMUSEMENT PARK full of nothing but Lego's.
DON'T TELL JACK!

Bronwyn Milestones

You think we went underground since Christmas?  Forgot how to type?  Ran out of material for the blog?  NAH!!!  We've just been busy pulling Bronwyn off of every chair, stool, counter and shelf in this house.  See what she's been up to for the last month or two...I finished putting a little milestone video together since she has so much to say and do!  Enjoy.

February Catchup

February brought us:

Valentine's Day!  Both kids felt the love. Bronwyn got a new Disney Princess Doll...Rapunzel and Jack got Lego's (shocking, I know.)

February brought us:

Wacky Wednesday.  Jack's school declared one of the Wednesday's wacky and each child went to school in wacky attire.  Jack created his own outfit.  At end of the day he was royally ticked..."mom it is not fair to just pick one Wednesday arbitrarily (pronounced more like obituary) to be wacky Wednesday. Wednesday is either wacky or it isn't.  Every Wednesday should be wacky Wednesday."  (Kid just wants to wear underwear on his head more often.)

February brought us:

Gracie!!!  Another fantastic weekend of spoiling Gracie to our hearts content.  This year we hand mani/pedis together, went shopping and saw the greatest show on earth...the CIRCUS!  Bronwyn LOVED the elephants and Jack LOVED the popcorn ;)

February brought us:

Ponytails!  She will now forever be nicknamed Cindy Lou Who.

And February brought us:

Sweetie Tea!  Jack's school invites all the moms for a sweetie tea!  The kids sing us songs, serve us lunch and as you can see fill our buckets with lots of sweat touches.  One questions on the place mat was "how old is your mom?"  Everyone else had crazy answers like 5, 16, 100...but my smart boy says 40 (I still have a few more months, son...don't rush it, payback will be you know what!)

As a good percent are body parts you can get a sense of how she likes to spend her time. I have a strong suspicion her "obsession" with identifying body parts is her sneaky "excuse" for spending a good portion of her free time poking us in the eye and sticking her finger in our noses and ears. Little boogar.

I also notice she has a bit of a bias for 'B' words...wonder why...Ms. Bronwyn?

DW Family Vacation Video 2011

In December we joined Minni and Poppop for a Disney World vacation. Here's a video we put together of the highlights of our trip. Enjoy!
